Affordable Housing Options at McKalla

Affordable Housing Options at McKalla

Affordable housing options at McKalla are finally ready for your full consideration. And, thanks to Gracywood Neighborhood Association, you get to weigh proposals on Monday night at the very same time that City Hall insiders (with Mayor Adler) push for a soccer (sucker) stadium at McKalla. Still, the insiders will push for a vote of the Council at Thursday’s Council meeting, so please read this entire post to see what you can do and do it, por favor!

“Affordable Housing Options at McKalla”
Monday, August 6, 2018 – 7:00 -9:00 p.m.
12041 Bittern Hollow – St. Albert Catholic Church Parish Hall
(Metal building with green awning. Park near or behind the BBQ pit.)
Open meeting for all interested in this topic.

The Fate of McKalla Place
Most of Austin have heard by now that there is a proposal for a Major League Soccer Stadium to be construction on the McKalla tract (behind the Discount Tire on Burnet Rd and Braker) on this City owned parcel.

The proposed stadium in North Austin has captured our attention. This project will impact our tax base and area neighborhoods for generations to come. Difficult issues like property taxes, traffic, and environmental impact remain unanswered by the sport venture company and City leaders.

To ensure that all of Austin has an opportunity to see and ask questions of the alternate proposals for McKalla, the Gracywoods Neighborhood Association’s August meeting will be dedicated to this topic.

The two developers that presented in June have made significant updates to their presentations. We encourage you to attend to see the changes. We will also host a new proposal from a neighborhood group and any other proposals that are submitted to the City, who wish to share their vision for McKalla Place.

Affordable Housing Models for McKalla – Guest speaker will describe affordable housing types appropriate to the McKalla site. (10 minutes)

What can you do as a Citizen?

· Get informed. Read the Stadium deal Term Sheet and Council’s questions. It is important to read through the documents to understand the financial commitments asked of the taxpayers.

· Speak Up. Every voice counts and contributes towards arriving at the best solutions for all Citizens. Email (as often as you like – usually one daily) or call the Mayor or your respective Council members first. (District 7 please call Leslie Pool’s office.)

· Participate. Attend this neighborhood meeting and the Thursday, August 9th meeting. It is important that we show up and express our vision for this site. (There is free parking in the City Hall garage (limited space). It is best to carpool. If you need transportation that evening, please email us and we try to match you a volunteer attending the meeting.)

The Council should also be voting to place two petitions on the November ballot; the CodeNEXT petition and the “Efficiency Audit” petition just certified by the City Clerk.

Tune-In, Turn-In Petitions for a public vote on CodeNEXT

Tune-In, Turn-In Petitions for a public vote on CodeNEXT

Bring The Papoose Petition Wagon to your neighborhood! We’ll even bring ice-cream for the kiddos.

This event is being held on election night, November 7, for statewide constitutional amendments. Why? So, we can hopefully give you the motivation to give us a very nice BIG turn in of the thousands of pages of CodeNEXT petitions being circulated by IndyAustin and the Let Us Vote Austin (LUVA) political action committees. These are the SAME petition, folks, so carry either one but make sure people are signing only one of them. These should not be confused with the online petition either. For ballot access, only Austin voters can sign and they must sign a petition on paper — so we have an original signature!

The deadline to turn in petitions for CodeNEXT is early January — an exact date will be released closer to January. Therefore, we’d like to wrap this thing up before the holidays. Which one? Thanksgiving would be nice, but that depends on YOU!

Remember, we will need more than 20,000 valid signatures to file by then.

Here’s our CodeNEXT page with all you need right now.

Speakers will provide updates on CodeNEXT — there’s a lot happening, don’t ya know!

Plenty of free parking in the back!

PS Do you know of larger outdoor events we should bring The Papoose Petition Wagon to? Call Linda at 512-657-2089 or email us at
